ABOUT US

SSS 2018.jpg
STRONGER TOGETHER

The West of Scotland Military Wives Choir was formed in 2012, inspired by the BBC TV programme "The Choir", featuring Gareth Malone.

Part of the Military Wives Choirs Foundation, a network of 72 choirs and 2,000 members in the UK and British bases abroad, our membership includes women who have been with us from our beginnings and others who have been with us for only a few weeks. The nature of service life means the choir has an ever-changing line-up, but our core ethos of being the best we can be, while welcoming every eligible person, remains constant.

Performing at a wide variety of events, from local care homes, weddings and garden fetes to much larger venues including Stirling Castle, the Scottish National Portrait Gallery in Edinburgh, the Royal Concert Hall, Glasgow and the National Armed Forces Day event in Stirling, we have also been privileged to perform "Proud" with Heather Small of M People, and "Cry" with Lulu (twice!).  We look forward to more exciting bookings in the future.

We Have Some Very Exciting News to Share!

Following our recent recruitment drive, we are delighted (and very excited) to introduce our brand new Musical Director, Shona Mackay!

Shona Mackay is a Glasgow-based interdisciplinary composer. She started her musical life as a French horn player, performing with various youth orchestras, concert bands and ensembles before going on to study music at Glasgow University, where she discovered her love of composition. She continued her studies at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland (then RSAMD), graduating with an M.Mus (Composition), and subsequently a practice-based PhD.

Shona’s music has been performed internationally and she has worked with a variety of ensembles including the Glasgow School of Art Choir, the Brodick Quartet, Hebrides Ensemble, Red Note and Ensemble Thing.

Alongside composition, Shona works as a lecturer at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and is the Musical Director of The Cumbernauld Choir.

Shona is delighted to be appointed as the new MD of the West of Scotland Military Wives Choir and we can't wait to get singing!
